What does a dietitian eat? (Part 4 of 4)

Ahh…dietitians….they must cook nice, warm, home-cooked meals all the time. Comfort foods, crock-pot recipes, all that fun stuff.  Well, some of us don’t want to slave over a hot stove after 8 hours of work. Some of us don’t want to spend more than 20 minutes preparing a meal. And then there’s this dietetic intern, who apparently doesn’t want to spend more than 20 seconds preparing a meal, as evidenced by her food choices below. Hey, we have busy lives, what I can I say?

The finale, the last installment in “What does a dietitian (or dietetic intern) eat?” Hopefully this series has answered your question. And if you are still puzzled, the answer is this: the same as what everyone else eats.

What does a dietitian eat? (Part 3 of 4)

This was perhaps the toughest MyPyramid to make, because this dietetic intern seems to eat a healthy, 98% vegetarian diet, 98% of the time. Her only saving grace is that she has a certain weakness for chocolate, which I personally can respect. 🙂 Although it hasn’t been recorded, I’m pretty sure all of the main dishes she cooks have at least 1 of these food groups in them, which is fine by me because thanks to her, I’ve actually grown to like the taste of squash.

So here you go: the third, true and honest example of what a dietitian eats:

What does a dietitian eat? (Part 2 of 4)

When dietitians (and dietetic interns) go out to eat, they must order wraps and side salads and water and all that “healthy” stuff. Well, sometimes we do. And other times we get greasy, amazing, bacon cheeseburgers with a side of fries and split a dessert. Pretty much the same as anyone else.

Here’s the 2nd “MyPyramid” example for you to ponder over. And yes, this represents the typical diet of a dietetic intern (she knows who she is):

Edit: I realize I made a mistake by skipping out on one of the other major food groups this dietetic intern frequents. So I will include the revised, more accurate version below:

What does a dietitian eat? (Part 1 of 4)

You may be thinking that since registered dietitians (& dietetic interns!) study nutrition, they also eat healthy 100% of the time. Or you may be realistic and know that can’t be the case! Just like I’m sure not all dentists floss each day, and not all nurses are non-smokers…right?

At a recent get-together, 3 other dietetic interns and I jokingly designed our own versions of the MyPyramid, based off of the foods we eat most often.  It was all in jest and we had a good laugh, but I thought I’d share them because I think it makes an important point. None of us have to eat “healthy” 100% of the time.  Any food can fit into a healthy diet.  It’s my strong belief that there are no “bad foods” just bad dietary patterns.  So if you fret over eating a cupcake or are nervous about the calories in 1/2 cup of turkey gravy for Thanksgiving…or still feeling guilty over eating all the leftover Halloween candy, relax. Nobody is perfect, and you can eat and drink anything you like. Just remember portion size, balance, and make it a priority to stay active with 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

So without further ado, here is the 1st pyramid in the “What does a dietitian eat?” series:
